Almost every sign we make can be produced in either PLA or PETG. They look nearly identical on the shelf, cost similar money, and hold color equally well — so the choice comes down to where the piece is going to live.
The short version
- Indoors, climate controlled, not handled much? PLA. It holds the crispest detail and gives the widest color range.
- Outdoors, near a window, in a vehicle, or wiped down regularly? PETG. Every time.
If you only remember one thing: PLA softens at a temperature a parked car in Miami reaches easily.
PLA: sharpest detail, lowest heat tolerance
PLA is the default for interior signage. It prints with very clean edges, which matters when a logo has fine strokes or small text, and it comes in the broadest color selection.
Its limitation is heat. PLA begins to soften somewhere around 55–60 °C (about 130–140 °F). That sounds high until you consider a dark-colored sign sitting behind glass in direct Florida sun, or anything left on a dashboard. Under sustained load at those temperatures a PLA panel can sag — slowly, and usually permanently. Prolonged UV exposure also makes it more brittle over time.
None of that matters in a lobby, an office corridor, or on a reception desk. For those, PLA is the better-looking choice.
PETG: tougher, more forgiving, slightly softer detail
PETG handles roughly 75–80 °C (around 170 °F) before it starts to move, which puts a sunlit window or a hot exterior wall comfortably inside its range. It is also less brittle — it tends to flex rather than snap, which is worth having on anything that gets knocked, carried to trade shows, or handled daily.
It resists moisture and cleaning products better too. For a restaurant table piece that gets sanitised between covers, or bathroom and poolside signage in a humid climate, PETG is the material that still looks right in a year.
The trade-off is marginal: PETG is very slightly less crisp on the finest details, because it flows a little more as it cools. On a logo at normal sign scale you will not see the difference.
Choosing by use case
- Lobby and reception signs — PLA, unless the wall gets direct afternoon sun.
- Office and door signs — PLA.
- Safety and warning signage — PETG. These are exactly the signs you cannot afford to have deform.
- House numbers and exterior plaques — PETG.
- Restaurant table pieces — PETG, because of the cleaning.
- Name badges — PLA for appearance; PETG if staff wear them outdoors all day.
- Trade show pieces — PETG. They get packed, shipped, and unpacked repeatedly.
What does not change
Color range, finish quality, and the raised/engraved/flat options are the same in both materials. Neither is meaningfully heavier. Neither is food safe as supplied, so treat coasters and table pieces as surfaces rather than tableware.
